How My Photography Journey Began: From the Amazon Jungle to Park City, Utah
In 2015, my passion for photography was ignited deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle. During a humanitarian trip to Peru, I was handed a camera with no instructions and told to capture the world around me. What began as a simple task turned into a life-changing journey, shaping my love for storytelling through photography.
How the Amazon Jungle Sparked My Photography Journey
Before this trip, I had casually used a camera, mostly learning by watching my mom, Heidi, who is an accomplished photographer. From her, I picked up basic skills like using a few buttons, but I didn’t truly understand concepts like exposure, composition, or depth of field.
Everything changed when I joined the photography team on this trip. I was tasked with documenting the vibrant life and landscapes of Peru. Suddenly, I realized that capturing meaningful photos required so much more than pointing and shooting. To truly preserve the beauty around me, I needed to understand the essentials—light, focal points, and depth.
Learning Photography Essentials on the Go
For two weeks, I trekked through the Amazon with a Canon 60D slung over my shoulder, determined to make the most of every opportunity. Each click of the shutter taught me something new about the art and technicalities of photography. I experimented with angles, adjusted my settings to capture depth of field, and learned how to use natural light to enhance each shot.
I still remember the weight of the camera, the ache in my shoulders, and the thrill of discovering how powerful photography could be. Those images didn’t just capture moments; they told stories.
From the Amazon to Park City: A Passion for Storytelling
The photos I captured during that trip have since been published and recognized with accolades. While those honors mean a lot, the real reward was discovering my passion for photography. That experience taught me how to see the world through a different lens—literally and figuratively.
Today, I channel that passion into my work as a photographer, now based in Park City, Utah. Whether I’m capturing family portraits, engagement sessions, or event photography, I bring the same dedication and love for storytelling that began in the Amazon jungle.
